Rag Doll Curls Quick Start

Disclaimer: Knowing your hair type and porosity goes a long way in order to know how to properly care for your it. I have naturally slightly wavy hair which is type 2A which I enhance (currently anyway) with what are known as heatless velvet rope curls which is very similar to Victorian rag doll curls.

Please note: This is a currently evolving list

How to get my hair, quicksheet:

General advice:
Washing:

  • Use a little shampoo. It strips natural oils as well so use it at the scalp and let it glide down the rest instead of making your head look like a bubble bath.
  • Conditioner, a lot of it, for as long as you can leave it in for while in the shower.
  • I use a detangler when conditioner is in no brushing otherwise.

Post wash:

  • Air dry (takes an hour or two) before resetting curls.
  • Always: (like with conditioner, hair spray, oils, water to scrunch to work the product into the coil.

Double rope velvet curl method:

  • Pre-curl prep:
  • Dampen with water for hold
  • Use an appropriate oil for your hair type*. (Curls depend on moisture which oil locks in but water must be there to be locked in.)

Taking the curls out:

  • Carefully from the end with patients. Unwrap and allow to hold form.
  • Hairspray (scrunch)
  • Place hair into a pineapple bun for lift (for a few minutes at least).

Additional:

Sleep: in pineapple bun, with a silk cap or pillow sheet.

Colors: Ion True Tones for Dark Hair Crimson, Ion Pigment boost Red Hot

2A oils I sort it into:

lighter oils useful on pre-oiling or refresh concentrated on the dryer ends of the hair (It takes time for the oils from your scalp to reach that far): argan, jojoba, grapeseed, sweet almond, etc.

heavier oils useful for prewash heated moisture mask:
coconut oil, avocado oil
